Thanks, Friends!! I managed to get Splunk running on my VM Linux (Ubuntu). Now ready to tinker! 🙂
Steps I took to install:
-Downloaded Splunk .deb
Once downloaded run> sudo dpkg -i Downloads/"ENTER SPLUNK FILE NAME".deb
First time start up run> /opt/splunk/bin/splunk start
You'll get prompted to Agree To Terms and Set Admin Password
-Once you've set everything up:
To start run> sudo /opt/splunk/bin/splunk start
Wait for output The Splunk web interface is at http://"YOURUSERNAME":8000
Go to output and get to Splunking!
Hope this helps anyone who was having trouble with the regular Docs instructions like me.

For reasons beyond me- the same commands I used yesterday worked today. Possibly got file allocation mixed up or slight typos in the terminal. Either way, I now have it up and running! Thank you for the offer to help. It is very much appreciated. 🙂

Thank you both for the advice! I will give it another shot- as this is the reoccurring suggestion for beginners like myself. Out of curiosity though, how does this work in a professional setting. Let's say if you are a contracted Data Analyst who does reporting on a per basis workflow, constantly working with new companies and new data. Does one constantly clear their Splunk, create new Indexes for each company worked with, etc? I know this is somewhat of an advanced question above my current knowledge base- just very curious on how this is done in practice.

What is the easiest method of starting a new Splunk environment? I was suggested to create a virtual machine with my choice of Linux OS, but the installation of Splunk in any Linux suite has been a nightmare. Is there any way to simply create a new instance within my already existing Splunk windows suite?

Hello Splunkers!
I'm getting into the nitty-gritty of Splunk and trying to apply my own data. I came up with the idea of trying to collect user and program data from the DirecTv receivers in my house. We have the newer Genie system that operates on a wireless basis. How would I go about doing this? It is connected both to our house Wifi router and it's own standalone wireless bridge. Given all these access points there must be a way to input it into Splunk, right?
I'm still a novice but trying to find data around me to collect and visualize- so I can practice my new found Splunk knowledge.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the training and certification. That is a good point! I will definitely try to apply myself to gain more practical knowledge and see how everything fits together. Is the Power User Exam all multiple choice and fill in the blank like Cert 1, or does it also contain lab work of some sorts?

Afternoon everyone!
So I'm excited about having finished Fundamentals 1- but as we all know, with the new certificates rolling out, us new to the training have to wait a few weeks before we can take the exam. From those who have the experience of Fund 1/2. Is it advisable to wait and hold off starting with Fund 2 due to too much info at once, or is Fund 2 not overly intensive and easily distinguishable.
I ask this because I would hate to get ahead of myself and then get things mixed up once exams are available. Although from my understanding it does build off one another.

Hi all,
So I finished with all my coursework for Fundamentals Part 1! While the new certification launch is having us wait to register for exams, I'm looking to extend my knowledge through practical experience. Are there any additional resources for projects or labs available?
I would also be open to working with other people! I'm a novice, but am eager to learn and add to my experience and be able to add to my portfolio for my own professional path. If there is anyone open to this- who could use an extra User Level partner/worker, let me know. 🙂
