Can I have http communication and https communication between SH and Search Peers against same search peer?

Additional background:

I disabled https communication (between SH and Search Peers -- splunkd) for performance. However, I'd like to stand up a standalone SH with secure communication to splunkd to the same search peers. This is for a standalone WAN SH.

Anyone know if there is anything that would prevent me from doing this?

Apparently not without using a third-party proxy which would (probably not) be supported by Splunk. Since the enableSplunkdSSL is set on the indexers, once its set, you're committed to SSL or no-SSL communication.
