Based on my testing on v7.2.8, I found the following types to render: GIF (even animated GIF), JPG, PNG, and SVG.
Here's the code I used to throw together a test. Because my local instance is down at the moment, and there's no uploader for static files to our work instance, I referenced an outside web server. However, everything did render.
