The app's splunkbase page says

Install the Splunk Essentials for Predictive Maintenance app on a test instance separate from production infrastructure.

so it would seem it is to be installed in one place.  The description of the app reads like it's intended to be a tutorial.  Once you've used the app to learn to do predictive maintenance you apply your new skill on another (only one, I surmise) instance.
