Don't expect great syntax from a PowerPoint slide.

That item is trying to say SPL derives some of its syntax from Unix pipelines (that is, using the '|' character to funnel the output of one command into another) and from SQL (certain commands).  The SPL language itself is focused on ("optimized") time-series data
