I need to know if the splunkForwarders that we have in place right now, on our current version (5.0.1) will have to be upgraded for/with splunk 6 or if the splunk core is backward compatible. Please respond ASAP.

From docs:

6.0 indexers are backwards compatible with forwarders down to 4.x.
