Version control for Splunk https://splunkbase.splunk.com/app/4355/ does something similar but not an exact match for what you want.

It's open source on github FYI

Hi @sansmish,

if you make a change to a dashboard outside the Splunk UI (e.g. using an external editor or committing the file from a source control program) you need everytime to restart Splunk so the updates will be effectly.

For this reason, it's a little difficoult using programs as Source Safe (or other similar programs) with Splunk.

So you could try the opposite approach: modify dashboard in Splunk UI and then (e.g. using a scheduled script) safe it in Source Safe.

Ciao.

As I mentioned in an answer to a similar question, Tom West's video shows you how he does version control in splunk https://community.splunk.com/t5/Developing-for-Splunk-Enterprise/Splunk-automation/m-p/555549#M5086
