I would start with the Getting Data In (GDI) Tutorial at docs.splunk.com : http://docs.splunk.com/Documentation/Splunk/6.2.6/SearchTutorial/AboutgettingdataintoSplunk. Its a good entry point, along with all of the other content on docs.

There's a lot of different methods that Splunk can ingest data.
