For a php programmer, you could use splunk for :

  • monitor and look for error patterns in the logs of your applications
  • generate stats on your website usage
  • generate stats on the usage of your php program (for optimization)

The prerequisite to start are common :

  • some computer science to install and configure, know where to find the log files
  • math degree to dive into statistical analytics
  • reading degree, the docs are very complete http://docs.splunk.com
  • curiosity to play with the search language.
