Splunk server is running 4.3.2, installed UF 4.3.2 on winXP embedded client and was getting the following error
"Message=Splunk could not get the description for this event. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupt"

Looked around here and saw that other rolled back the UF to 4.3.1...well I did that and notice in splunkd.log the following error over and over..
"0400 ERROR WinRegistryApi - RegKey::open - RegOpenKeyExW returned error 2"

Any ideas??

Long story short Win XPe is just a stripped down version of XP. We were missing the msaudite.dll file under \windows\system32 folder. Along with that we were missing several registry subkeys under HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\eventlog<eventlog>.

Just copied the .dll and registry hives from a full XP installation and resolved all the issues. this also fixed the error where the event log was not reading the events instead giving the following message "The description for event ID (XXX) in Soruce (XXX) cannot be found..."
