Timeline in view using "recommended" method ?

Digging through the docs I see how to use advanced xml and the timeline module to get a simple timeline of my search results onto a dashboard view.

However, the most recent documentation seems to imply that simple xml and the web framework methods should be used whenever possible instead of advanced xml.

QUESTION: Is there an alternative to advanced xml to include a timeline in a view?

Thanks.

The default way would be to build the view using the Splunk Web Framework: http://dev.splunk.com/view/web-framework/SP-CAAAER6
See the related app for examples: http://apps.splunk.com/app/1613/
Once installed, switch to the examples app and select Web Framework Components -> Search Manager Controls for search bars, timeline views, and related stuff.

Here's an excerpt from that example:

var TimelineView = require("splunkjs/mvc/timelineview");
new TimelineView({
  id: "example-timeline",
  managerid: "example-timeline-search",
  el: $("#divToHangOn2")
}).render();

That'll render a time line for the search manager called example-timeline-search into the div tag with the id divToHangOn2.
