What does the maintenance mode of ITSI do?

We wonder what the maintenance mode of ITSI does as we ran into issues with that during the Splunk core upgrade last night.

From the Administer Splunk IT Service Intelligence manual (https://docs.splunk.com/Documentation/ITSI/4.2.1/Configure/MaintenanceWindows): Maintenance mode to prevents ITSI from triggering alerts from machines and other devices that are undergoing maintenance operations or do not require active monitoring.
