SDK Credential Encryption

Is there a way to encrypt the credentials passed through the SDK to Splunk? Sending them in the clear doesn't look very secure? I'm not a security expert, so if I'm missing something I'd appreciate knowing what I'm missing.

The SDKs use the REST API underneath, which connects to the Splunk management port 8089 over HTTPS.
