Personal Splunk

I would like to purchase Splunk for my personal use, at home, and not in any way associated with my employer. I am not a student, academic or otherwise associated with a university. I do not want a free license to try-out the product. Does Splunk, Inc. offer this kind of license?

Keep in mind 1GB will cost around $2,000 for a perpetual license with a 20% annual maintenance fee.

Note... List pricing can be found here: https://www.splunk.com/en_us/products/pricing.html

Splunk Light (which has some restrictions see: https://www.splunk.com/en_us/products/splunk-light/splunk-light-vs-splunk-enterprise.html ) is close to these numbers:

1GB/day perpetual Light license is 2,160$ for the first year, and 360$ for each following year support/maintenance

1GB/day annual Light license is 900$ per year

List price for only a 1GB/day perpetual Enterprise license is actually 5,400$ for the first year, and 900$ for each following year for support/maintenance.

A 1 GB/day annual Enterprise license list price is 1,800$ per year.

yes,
contact Splunk and someone will love to take your money.
however, why wont you try for the developer license, i think you can get like 50gb for 6 months.
you can also use the free cloud instance with up to 5gb per day for couple of weeks and then move forward.
hope it helps

Thank you for your answer. I have the feeling that this company isn't about real solutions. Rather, it seems to be about taking ones money. I take a while to learn, my Achilles heal even in grad school, but I am not learning-disabled. I'll look into the free license, but I wonder how free is free.

Hmmm. Not sure where you get that one. The ONLY way that any organization gets to "take one's money" is to provide real solutions to people who are willing to pay for them. It isn't "take", it's "exchange".

From your question, you aren't really in the market for what they solve anyway, you are just trying to learn the product, and that's fine. It's GREAT, actually, and please do feel welcome to the community. Take all the time you need and get to know the community, the product, and the solutions that the product does provide. Then you can move on to the next level.

Now, regarding your initial question, if you are truly looking for "personal use", then you don't need the Enterprise features that are kept out of the free versions. Just start with the plain vanilla free free version and learn the query language and the basic features. If you happen to go over the 500M in any given day, it's not a tragedy. The system will give you a nastygram that will go away in a couple of weeks. You have to get a few such warnings in a row for the system to do anything about it, and under normal circumstances, for personal training usage, you aren't going to get close.

@haydenstecbauer,
you are welcome, i have to strongly disagree with your feeling. Splunk is a very solid solution forward company with awesome product and great services around broad usecases. it also charges money for its product and services.
please take a look at the rest of the comments regarding how free is free.
note, i do not work for splunk

Like people have mentioned, there are several free (as in free-beer) ways to get a perpetual license that is sufficient for personal use and learning. There are also several free courses you can take through Splunk Education here: https://www.splunk.com/en_us/view/education/SP-CAAAAH9

Overall the free license options are a balance - just like the free-samples at the store are for a taste...not a whole meal.

I do suggest the free developer license. It lasts for six months and has all the Splunk Enterprise features.

The regular free license is free forever, but it does not include authentication, alerting, distributed search, and other Enterprise capabilities.

Splunk Enterprise Free license feature chart: https://www.splunk.com/en_us/products/splunk-enterprise/free-vs-enterprise.html

There is actually also a Splunk Light Free License as well: http://docs.splunk.com/Documentation/SplunkLight/6.6.2/Installation/Aboutlicensing

Unlike Enterprise Free, Light Free actually gives you built in authentication for a single user, but requires contacting Splunk annually to get a new Splunk Light Free license, whereas Enterprise Free you could in theory run forever without talking to Splunk at all... both limited to the 500MB/day, and neither has alerting, or other "enterprise" features.
