Splunk startup failure: "Fatal error 'kse_create() failed'" on FreeBSD 8.0

I'm running the splunk 32-bit package for FreeBSD 6.x on FreeBSD 8.0 i386 with the compat6x package installed. I understand from other postings I've seen that this is expected to work.

However, first startup is failing. This is what I'm seeing:

> sudo ./splunk start

Splunk> See your world. Maybe wish you hadn't.

Anyone have any ideas what the problem is here?

I never was able to make this work. Eventually I just reinstalled the machine with 8.2-R amd64 and installed the FreeBSD 7.3 package with the 7x compat libs. That works great.
