Updating Splunk Enterprise is simple.
1) Download the desired version from splunk.com
2) Stop Splunk
3) Install the new version the same way you installed the old version (rpm, tar, etc.)
4) Start Splunk and accept the license agreement

The software is free.

NOTE: Version 8 contains changes for Python3 that may not be compatible with your installation. Be sure to read the release notes and run the Upgrade Readiness app (https://splunkbase.splunk.com/app/4698/).
