Installation

Splunk install earlier enterprise version

Hi!

I would like to know if it possible to reinstall old version of Splunk Enterprise(6.4.0) and replace the 6.5.4 instance?

Tried "yum localinstall 6.4.0.rpm" but got errors saying a newer version is already installed.

Is there a good way to install the old version and keep configs? Anyone who has done this?

Thanks,

Hi ucz350,
it's a good practice, before update of a Splunk version, to run a backup at least of $SPLUNK_HOME/etc folder or (better) of full Splunk installation.

Anyway, your problem is Apps or Splunk configurations?

if Apps, you can save $SPLUNK_HOME/etc/apps folder and then copy it on a new installation of 6.4.0, putting attention on the version of installed apps: if there's an app that requires 6.5.x, you cannot copy on 6.4.x.

The problem you mentioned "yum localinstall 6.4.0.rpm" is related that in yum catalog there's a newer version of Splunk, so you should delete Splunk from yum catalog and then install it again.
Otherwise, you could take the tar version of Splunk installation and untar it.

Only a final information: why do you want to come back from 6.5 to 6.4, when there's also 6.6.3?

Bye.
Giuseppe

I will not go back. Just curious if its possible without ruining the config. Gonna try this in my lab environment.

Thanks
