How to POST data to specific Splunk index via REST API

My Python script generate some results (Success/Failure output for certain services) which I want to send to a specific Splunk index using REST API.

Since I have never done this before, I would like to know what are the prerequisites to do this. Also, if you could provide an example of a simple POST to Splunk index, that would be great.
