Create apps on the splunkforwarder using REST API

Is it possible to create an App on a splunkforwarder using a REST API call?

I tried: curl -k -u admin:<password> https://localhost:8089/services/apps/appinstall -d name=<sometarfile>
Then I get the error: In handler 'appinstall': Admin handler 'appinstall' not found.</msg>

I would like to create a default App with a standard inputs.conf file using an automated process without having to have Unix rights on the machine the splunkforwarder is installed on. I'm able to use the admin user of the splunkforwarder.

I suggest that you look at the Splunk Deployment Server for your use case.
