Splunk Installation using tar as a root user

Can we install Splunk Enterprise as a root user using tar method?

If your current installation is running as a non root user, then you could install it as this user. If it’s owned by root then you must install it as root and after that you should consider to change the ownership to non root user and run it as non root user as @renjith_nair already said.

Thanks @renjith_nair for your reply.

I want to upgrade my Splunk Enterprise version so while upgrading it using tar should I upgrade it as a non-root user or as a root user? There should not be any permission denied issue during upgrade if I go with non-root user.

Please suggest some workaround if possible.

You can install splunk as a root but you shouldn't if possible. This is normally against the best practices considering the security aspects.
