DB Connect options/alternatives for SQL Server and Java 8?

After much trial and tribulation, i discovered that DB Connect is not compatible with Java 8, at least for MS SQL Server and ODBC (the JDBC-ODBC bridge was removed in Java 8). With Java 7 hitting EOL in early 2015, are there any other options to directly pull from SQL Server, or will DB Connect be updated to use Java 8?

I know you know this martin_mueller, but for posterity and others... DB Connect 2 uses Java 8.
