As data volumes continue to grow and environments become more distributed, managing and optimizing data effectively has become one of the most important responsibilities for modern security and platform teams. Organizations are constantly balancing the need to retain valuable data for investigations and analytics while also controlling storage costs and improving search performance.

To help practitioners better understand how to build an effective data management strategy in Splunk, we are launching a Data Management & Federation Bootcamp Series. This hands-on educational series will walk through the fundamentals of managing data across its lifecycle—from ingestion and routing to storage and optimization.

The bootcamp will consist of four sessions, designed to help administrators, engineers, and practitioners learn how to structure, process, and store their data more efficiently.

Our first two sessions are now open for registration, and we would love you to see you there.

Session 1 on April 8: Introduction to Data Management

In this session, we will start with the foundational concepts behind data management in Splunk and explore how proper data organization can significantly affect search performance, cost management, and operational efficiency.

We will cover topics including:

  • Introduction to Data Management and why it matters in modern data architectures
  • Indexes and data organization and how proper index strategy supports efficient data management
  • Dynamic Data types such as DDAS, DDAA, and DDSS and how they help manage data across its lifecycle
  • Object storage using Amazon S3 and best practices for data partitioning

By the end of this session, you will have a better understanding of how to structure your data to improve both performance and cost efficiency.

Session 2 on May 6: Event-Based Data Management and Processing

In the second session, we will focus on processing and optimizing data before it lands in Splunk indexes. Event-based data management allows organizations to reduce unnecessary ingestion costs while improving data quality and usability.

Topics will include:

  • An overview of Edge Processor (EP), Ingest Processor (IP), and Ingest Actions (IA)
  • SPL2 and how it can be used for data transformation
  • Common techniques used in data processing including:
  • Routing
  • Filtering
  • Masking
  • Transformation
  • Best practices for routing data to Amazon S3 and promoting it when needed
  • Using templates to simplify and standardize data processing workflows

This session will offer practical guidance on how to optimize data pipelines and ensure that the right data lands in the right place at the right time.

What to Expect from the Bootcamp Series

Across the four sessions, we will explore how organizations can build a comprehensive Data Management and Federation strategy that helps them:

  • Improve search performance
  • Reduce data ingestion and storage costs
  • Optimize data routing and transformation
  • Leverage object storage for scalable data retention
  • Implement modern data processing pipelines

Each session is designed to provide practical insights and actionable guidance that you can apply directly to your Splunk environment.
