Application Flow Map for specific CLR version

Hi.

I've just started to using the AppDynamics Lite to monitor our .NET web application.

After installation and starting, the Appdynamics Flow Map comes up displaying calls , which for me, looks like calls to only one of the agents discovered.

Looking at the agents connected, I can see all 8 of the different aplpication pools we use.

How can I switch it to display calls for other CLR versions ?

Hi Mikael,

Thanks for posting to FEZ forum. The expected behaviour is to show all the agents irrespective of the version of CLR. We have also reproduced this to be sure and double check.

If you look at the overview, it will show only one "localhost" and exit calls if any.

Can you please check and confirm if you are able to see the Business transactions from various applications (eg: application running of CLR Version 4.0 and 2.0). Do you see the snapshots for these applications ?

Also, can you please send a screenshot of the agents connected screen (I have attached screenshot for reference)

Thanks,

Santosh

Hi Santosh.

When I look at the overview, I see some calls to both CLR 2 and 4, but there should be more.

I've attached a screenshot of the agents.

Are the calls only from the IIS to other services, and not incoming to web endpoints from others ?

Regards

Hi Mikael,

I think there is some confusion here. Let me know if our understanding is not correct

1) You have multiple applications (app pools) you want to monitor using Lite

2) From the Agents.png we can confirm that mutiple apps/apppools are getting intrumented

3) I am not sure if we correctly understand your statement "I see some calls to both CLR 2 and 4, but there should be more."

  >> Do you mean you should see more number of Business Transactions ?

  >> What Business Transactions are you missing ? We support Asp.Net, WCF, Asp.Net Webservices OOTB.

4) Regarding your following question

Are the calls only from the IIS to other services, and not incoming to web endpoints from others ?

 >> What other apps are calling web end points ?

 >> Are these hosted in Isame IIS instance where Agent is installed ?

 >> We would mark the start of the BT at the IIS level only because that is where agent is running and instrumenting

Can you also attach the agent logs (Zipped) here. By default they are located at c:/AppDynamics/Logs

Let us know if there is any disconnect from our side.

Thanks,

Raunak

Hi.

Yes, the application have multiple app pools serving different applications.

There are 9 applications under one web site.

They use a mix of .NET 4 and .NET 2

The client calls to the different applications are either from a thick client written in C#, or from a web application.

I thought I would see the incoming calls from the clients to the 9 applications.

About the logs: I can see in the AgentLog.txt that you write out the passwords used by the clients in clear text.

I cannot send these files with such information.

Is this a configuration to turn off ?

Hi,

.Net Lite can only instrument applications which are hosted in IIS. So what that means that we will capture request which are coming into IIS Hosted app (w3wp.exe) and only after execiution starts with the monitored w3wp.exe. These are called entry points and captured in for of business transaction

In your case, you have thick client (WPF, Win Forms) which makes calls to  IIS hosted application ( may be asmx web service/WCF service), which  being non IIS application can not be monitored using Lite.

We have Appdynamics Pro edition which is capable of instrumenting both IIS and Non-IIS applications. wherein, you can see co-relation between IIS hosted application and non-IIS application.

Regarding Agent logs: let us know for which instances (ex. connection string .etc) you are seeingpassword data in clear text.

Please let us know tif something does not make sense.

Thanks,
Raunak

Hi.

Ok, so the Pro version seems to be of more interest to me.

About the log.

This is an extract from the AgentLog.txt, I've removed userids and password for security reasons.

Let me know how to turn off the logging of passwords .

Hi.

Also, all our applications are IIS hosted, so that in mind, I should see the calls to all hosted applications, right ?

Hi Mikael,

Yes, you should see business transactions for your IIS hosted applications.

Kindly let us know if you have any queries for me.

Thanks,

Santosh

Hi.

Ok, well I don't see them, and how about the logging of users passwords, that's a major issue.

Hi ,

Regarding User Paswword issue, we have already filed a bug and Devs are working on it.

Regarding the original problem can you attch the Business Transaction logs for our review. This file should not have any password entries.

Let us know if you have any concerns.

Thanks,

Hi,

Can you privide us the Business  Transaction logs. These files will not have ant logged conection string entries but Bts that have been identified by the lite agent.

Also let us know example of some Page/BTs that you expect to see but do not.

Also let us know the kind of BTs are these (Asp.net, WCF, WebServices)

Regarding the user password issues we could replicate the issue in house and have filed a bug for the Dev team. Thanks for bringing this to our notice.

Let me know if you need any clarrrifications around my requests.

Thanks,

Raunak

Hi.

Due to the problems of not seing calls to all applications, and the fact that you log information which is classified as hacking. I've uninstalled and deleted the application.

Hi mikael,

Can you attach the BusinessTransaction log file. This file will not have any paswword entries but would only list out the names of the identified BTs. If you have mutiple rolled over files please  zip and attach all of them.

Also let us know the name of the URLs/BTs that you think are not getting identified.

What kind of BTs are these ? (Asp.Net, WCF, ASMX) ?

Regarding the user passwords issue, we are tetsing this issue in house. We will keep you posted regarding this.

Thanks,

Raunak
