AppDynamics JMX Metrics

Hi guys,

We have a question: how we build a chart using data from custom MBean provided by one of the Tomcat infrastructure servers?

On the application side we define an MBean named "PredictiveAutoCall:type=AutoCallStats”. That bean and its attributes are visible through the MBean Browser for the node. However, we need to display data from that bean on a dashboard as charts, and for that we have to create metrics. This is where the problem appears: metrics created in the Tomcat configuration, as well as those created in a specially created AutoCalls configuration, are not displayed in Metric Browser and unavailable for drawing a chart.

Actually the connection between Metric Browser and Configuration>Instrumentation>JMX is not obvious. In our infrastructure we run several Tomcat servers but AutoCallStatsMBean is defined on only one of them. Given that, the JMX settings have no node connection - they are linked just to a configuration. We don’t see how we can configure that AutoCallStatsMBean should be searched on only one specific node or tier.

Our further experiments showed a strange behavior: when we renamed the "JDBC Connection Pools” metric for a Tomcat configuration, browser started to display two metrics: with an old and a new name and same sets of attributes. After we renamed the metric again, there are still 2 metrics in browser. That looks like a bug.

Hi ,

We request you to use "create metric" button from attributes screen in mbean browser to create JMX rule for target cusotm mbean so that the mbean will be created in metric browser in contorller UI under JMX section, we see the nodes/jvms that expose same mbean will be reported rest it should not, though the config applies to all nodes/tiers in applicaiton,  refer doc and see if that information helps: https://docs.appdynamics.com/display/PRO41/Configure+JMX+Metrics+from+MBeans

Regarding the old mbean folder/category we confirm that is not a bug in metric browser, metric path once created in metric browser will not be deleted , there is script to delete but it required some additional effort so we do not support deleting metrics , request you to plan before you define jmx rules that will result new metrics in metric browser, Hope that clarifies.

Regards,

Arun
