OSX Forwarder install documentation wrong?

zachvida
Path Finder

http://docs.splunk.com/Documentation/Splunk/6.0.1/Installation/InstallonMacOS

Command line install directions are incomplete and incorrect.

hdid splunk_package_name.dmg

installer -pkg splunk.pkg -target /

Should be:

hdid splunk_package_name.dmg

cd /Volumes/SplunkForwarder\ 6.0.1/

installer -pkg .payload/Splunk\ Universal\ Forwarder.pkg -target /

Tested this on Mavericks 10.9.1

It might also be good to mention you need root or to execute all commands with sudo. But it notifies you of that fairly quickly.

Thanks for pointing that out, we will correct the documentation. In the future, feel free to use the feedback box at the bottom of every topic; that will send your comment directly to the Splunk documentation team.

This is actually a (minor, but tacky) bug in our installer.

We shouldn't be using our docs to point people at hidden directories to do installs. We should either have the installer package available and visible in the DMG or make sure whatever we do display on the DMG links to the correct package file, wherever we decide to place it.

I've filed a bug.
