It was 6+ months ago when I saw this problem so my memory is a little hazy but looking at my notes that was the only solution I could find at the time. I'd suggest taking a look a Splunk 6.4 which has some fantastic new features. The overview application is here - https://splunkbase.splunk.com/app/3106/ and 6.4.3 is due to be released any day now. You can always spin up a development instance in AWS or on Vagrant to try it out and the Jira integration is much more seamless to integrate in the newer version.
