Using Splunk to Analyze Web Traffic & Machine-Generated Data from External Content Sites

I’ve been working with Splunk recently to improve the way we collect and analyze machine-generated data coming from various external web sources. Splunk’s strength is in its ability to ingest logs at scale, index them in real time, and then make that data searchable for operational insights.

One interesting use case I’ve been exploring is analyzing behavioral patterns and performance data from lightweight content sites  for example, menu/price-listing sites like starbucks-menu.co.uk (not affiliated with Starbucks, just a typical public content site). These kinds of sites generate a surprisingly diverse set of machine-generated data: HTTP access logs, user-agent fingerprints, referrer patterns, crawl/bot signatures, CDN logs, and page latency measurements.

From a technical perspective, Splunk makes it easy to:

Ingest heterogeneous logs (nginx, Cloudflare, CDN edge logs, custom application logs)

Detect anomalies in request rates or geographic traffic spikes

Identify suspicious crawlers or bot patterns

Correlate performance issues (latency, status codes, TLS errors) with backend infrastructure

Visualize user behavior across different sections of a site via dashboards

Trigger alerts when error thresholds or security indicators exceed expected norms

This kind of workflow is valuable not just for large enterprises, but also for small, content-based sites where operators want visibility into uptime, potential scraping, SEO-impacting issues, or early indicators of malicious activity. I’m curious how others in the community are using Splunk (or similar platforms) to monitor public-facing, low-resource websites.

  • Are you integrating web logs directly?

  • Any best practices for keeping dashboards efficient with high traffic volume?
