Search Head is responding sometimes with proxy error

From time to time we can see that if you try to access the search head GUI that you get a proxy error. When this happens we also can see that the count of apache processes increases from around 50 to 200. After around 20 minutes the apache count drops and you can access the GUI again.
Has somebody has seen such an behavior and knows what the reason is?
