Is it possible to prepopulate search text via URL?

Yes, you can do this with the q parameter. The search is automatically executed though:

http://localhost:8000/en-US/app/search/flashtimeline?q=search%20sourcetype%3Dsyslog

the searchstring would obvs be escaped.
