How to resolve check_hostname requires server_hostname in Splunk 9?

I am getting an error "check_hostname requires server_hostname" with Splunk 9 when using request.post() with proxy with https .

How to resolve this error?

+1 Our product retrieves threat intelligence data from an external api into Splunk.
We give users the option of using a proxy when getting that data. This functionality worked flawlessly in up until 8.2.10

Customers have been getting "check_hostname requires server_hostname" since upgrading to 9+ when using a proxy.
