When can we use the comment options in SPL?

When can we use SPL2 with the lovely comments options described at https://docs.splunk.com/Documentation/SCS/current/Search/Comments  ?

If you are running splunk in Release 8.1
Try this.
`comment (" THIS IS A COMMENT ")`

[isoutamo]

In 8.1 you can comment as
```you text here```
In earlier versions you could use
rename COMMENT as “your text here”
