When trying to download this app into my splunk cloud10.2 environment, I get the error message:
Invalid app contents: archive contains more than one immediate subdirectory: and Splunk_TA_vmware
The listing on splunkbase suggests that this app should be compatible with Cloud 10.2.
Thanks for the reply guys - the links and suggestions have really helped me understand the issue and work around!
@KevHaze Perfecto, you're welcome!
Hi @KevHaze
Can I check why you are installing that specifically on Splunk Cloud? Are you intending to have Splunk Cloud query your VMware stack directly? The docs at https://docs.splunk.com/Documentation/AddOns/released/VMW/Prepareyoursystem suggest that you use a dedicated Data Collection Node/Scheduler which would sit OUTSIDE the Splunk Cloud stack:

This is one of a few apps which are not directly installable from GUI. Neither in Cloud nor on-prem.
Those apps are de facto a collection of multiple apps which must be unpacked and installed individually (sometimes not all of them).
It's a very ugly issue but that's how it is.
@KevHaze The error you pointed out is not connected to version compatibility. It means the app archive isn’t packaged the way Splunk Cloud expects. Cloud validation requires the tarball to have exactly one top‑level directory (for example Splunk_TA_vmware/) containing all the app files.
Solution: Splunk VMWare app and add-on cannot be installed from the GUI. These binaries need a different type of installation, and that is documented in the link below:
