Go to $SPLUNK_HOME/etc/apps/user-prefs/local/user-prefs.conf and add something like this:

[YOUR_ROLE]
default_namespace = YOUR_DEFAULT_APP

Where you replace "YOUR_ROLE" with the name of the role you wish to set a default for, and replace "YOUR_DEFAULT_APP" with the name of the app you wish the role to default to.
