Hello,
I have just installed Splunk with a Free license. It appears to automatically log me in, and doesn't prompt me for a password. I don't see a logout button, either. Is there any security what-so-ever in the free version, or do I need to completely lock it down at the firewall level by IP address?
Nope, Splunk Free doesn't come with authentication. On the other hand, firewall filtering != && < authentication.
The most common approach if you have no $$$ but want 500 MB/day AND authentication is to put Splunk Free behind a proxy such as Apache. There are a few blog posts and how-to's that a google search will reveal to you.

I would love to see at least a default single user that would allow the data to be password protected. Even for a free version this should be expected with the type of data that is collected by Splunk. I can understand forgoing multiple user support for a free version though.
Is it changed in version 5? So can we do simple user authentication with Splunk Free out of the box?
