How does Native Splunk Authentication work?

Hello,
As the question title suggests, I am looking for any technical documentation that concerns the Native Splunk Authentication mechanism. For example, is there anything concerning how and where account information is stored, and whether data is encrpyted?

Splunk uses a passwd file ($SPLUNK_HOME/etc/passwd) that is very much like its Linux namesake. Passwords are encrypted in the file, but the rest of the contents are plain text.
