Querying Splunk performance/monitoring metrics programmatically

Is there any API we could use to query Splunk performance/monitoring metrics. We want to leverage the data for our internal analysis. We see the data in the monitoring console but we want to programmatically query the data.

Click on the magnifying glass icon in the bottom-right corner of a MC panel to open the panel in a Search window.  There you will see the query being used so you can implement it programmatically.
