Monitoring Splunk

Keeping track of system users

Hey,

I have been looking at the index=_internal and index=_audit data to get a feel for the data stored in these indexes.

I would like to know the following:

Is there a way of keeping track of who is using my splunk instance?

The number of new users is growing every week and it would be great to see how many times particular user ids (e.g. admin) log in to my splunk instance.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Data like this is provided in the Status >> Search >> User activity dashboard from the Search app in Splunk. From that dashboard, you can click through to the actual search that populated the results. Many of these searches rely on macros for modularity, but you can inspect the actual search using the search inspector from the Actions menu.

Ant, could you please share the search you created?

Thanks Stephen. The User Activity dashboard doesn't quite give me what I am looking for but it is useful. I wanted to see information such as how many times does a particular user login. I have written a search which shows this data.
