Hi dave_smith!

A ton of information regarding Splunk's API, including an overview, reference guide and user guide can be found here:

http://dev.splunk.com/restapi

I am not sure what specifically you are referring to in regards to "supporting SIEM's front end and back end", but if you have further questions after reviewing the REST info in the dev portal, let us know!

Hi, thanks for your reply.

What I meant was; which parts of the API support extensions to the SIEMs “front
end” – i.e. the data analysis and visualisation; and which parts allow
extensions to the “back-end” – i.e. for log reading and connection to
other security systems.

Thank you,

David

Ah, ok. I recommend starting here: http://docs.splunk.com/Documentation/Splunk/6.5.0/RESTTUT/RESTbasicexamples

Generally the API is used by other systems to run searches against Splunk to bring the data back for further manipulation or visualization, or to actually interact and manage Splunk.

The dev guide should have all you need to get started.
