hi! I will be needing to reinstall splunk to a new account but I want to retain my old splunk index files, dashboard and all the other files.? will copying the bin folder work even if it is under a new login account? thank you much!

Get a diag to backup your existing configurations just in case:
$SPLUNK_HOME/bin/splunk diag
Then just install Splunk right over the top of your existing Splunk with a different user. Your stuff will still be there.
