I have Splunk 4.3 for Linux 2.6 kernel on CentOS 6.
I have switched my license to a free one, and the license manager shows this license group properly, and I have restarted Splunk and the OS multiple times.
However when I go to the page to change my password, it says:

Your account is an Enterprise license-level feature and is currently not available on this instance.
To enable this and other Enterprise features, learn more about licenses at Splunk.com or contact Splunk Sales directly.
Splunkd response: Current license does not allow the requested action
Ok. I already had a username and password set so I found a way to remove it.

Splunk Free version has no login or password thus you cannot change password
