Hundreds of thousands of these in the splunkd.log.

07-19-2016 08:44:34.161 -0700 ERROR LMStack - Invalid License with infinite byte quota with non-infinite max_stack_quota byte, set the effective stack size to the min between them

Such a pretty error. So balanced, with it's infinite bytes and non-infinite stack. Work of art.

What does it mean?

Splunk had me install a new license. The new license differs in this way.

Old one: quota_bytes 1073741824.0
New one: quota_bytes 1.84467440737e+19

Shut down splunk, delete my old license, bring it back up, and no more errors.

We upgraded our license in mid-July. We don't have logs from that far back, but this issue might have started after we applied the paid splunk light license to our free installation.

Heard back from support on this.
That is the root cause. The Free part is the infinite error message.
Essentially you have to create a Splunk light environment, apply the license and move over any relevant indexes.
To fix the issue there are 2 paths. Try the first path
1) delete (fully) the both the Light and the Free license.
2) apply the light license.
If that works, you should be fine.
If not, then you need to "start over:"
1) remove/delete the Splunk Light license on your Free instance
2) stand up the Light environment
3) move data from ... (This is where the guy's message stopped. I guess he ran out of steam?)

Case Number 375874

The answer provided above did not work. There's no supported way to remove the license. I was instructed to not do anything until the next tech could take a look at it. Case is currently unresolved.
