Getting Data In

"APPCRASH" error when register NET SNMP daemon as a Windows service

I'm trying to install and configure NET-SNMP to write log file and have Splunk monitor on it. But when I register snmptrapd or snmpd as service after installation, it always gives me "APPCRASH" error. Also, I've followed the documentation http://docs.splunk.com/Documentation/Splunk/4.3.3/Data/SendSNMPeventstoSplunk but no data comes in my log file. Do I need to do other configuration on my server? Thanks.

NET-SNMP on Windows can be tricky. Some of the available pre-compiled builds are just not that awesome. If you have a compiler, compiling the latest source from the NET-SNMP website may not be a bad idea. If you aren't tied to Windows, you can always run your snmptrapd and a Splunk forwarder on a Unix host. NET-SNMP is much better behaved there.

Thanks,I'm actually a little confused about how I should configure snmpd and snmptrapd. Suppose I want to get SNMP notifications from host A, I should configure both on host A, right? But after I finished configuration, all I get in my log file is the version information, no other data comes in. Do you know why this happens? Thanks.
