Installing Splunk Enterprise 6.4 on Windows 8.1 64-bit, why am I getting error "An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly."?

Why am I getting a error while installing Splunk Enterprise 6.4. The dialog box indicates:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\Splunk\bin\Python.EXE
R6034
An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly.
Please contact the application support team for more information.

In the end, I think this had something to do with the previously installed python versions on my system.

Had the same problem, but found a solution on stackexchange here

It turned out to be Dropbox that caused it for me.
