Getting Data In

How to troubleshoot why the URL endpoint for HTTP Event Collector results in 404 Not Found?

Though I set up the HTTP Event Collector according to http://docs.splunk.com/Documentation/Splunk/6.3.2/Data/UsetheHTTPEventCollector, the endpoint URL is not enabled. The endpoint URL http://hostname:8088/services/collector/event results in 404 Not Found.
How can I fix it?

Also I encountered "HTTP Input data endpoint server cannot be started." error when I saved Global Settings in HTTP EC as seen in the attached image.

Is this error relevant to 404?

I would think so. Is port 8088 available on your server? Have you checked splunkd.log to see whether it contains any further details as to why you cannot enable the HTTP input listener?

I enabled 8088 but it was already used in apache. I didn't notice it.
I was stupid... Thank you, guys!! It's resolved.

You can also configure the port in HEC if you'd like to use a different port than the default.

Kikeyama,

I have converted ssievert's comment to an answer. Please mark it as the answer if you believe it is.

Did you check the log files? Why can the endpoint not be started? Insuffient privileges? Port already in use? Check in /var/logs
