Does Universal Forwarder Solaris v8 app work on Ultra-60?

Downloaded and installed the Solaris 8 packagewith:

% pkgadd -d splunkforwarder-4.2.3-105575-solaris-8-sparc.pkg

When trying to start it fails with:

% /opt/splunkforwarder/bin/splunk start
/opt/splunkforwarder/bin/splunk: Exec format error. Binary file not executable.

Here is the machine:

% uname -a
SunOS XXXXX 5.8 Generic_108528-20 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-60

% file /opt/splunkforwarder/bin/splunk
/opt/splunkforwarder/bin/splunk: ELF 64-bit MSB executable SPARCV9 Version 1, dynamically linked, stripped

And the package info:

% pkginfo -l splunkforwarder
PKGINST: splunkforwarder
NAME: Splunk Agent
CATEGORY: application
ARCH: sparc
VERSION: 4.2.3
BASEDIR: /opt
VENDOR: Splunk Inc.
DESC: Splunk is the search engine for Operational Intelligence.
PSTAMP: epm20110805131057
INSTDATE: Oct 14 2011 12:36
STATUS: completely installed
FILES: 222 installed pathnames
34 directories
55 executables
77984 blocks used (approx)

Is this hardware/OS combo just to old, or have the wrong bits ended up in the Solaris 8 package?

Went ahead and opened a support ticket on this. Turns out that Solaris 8 support has been dropped and the download page hadn't been updated.

Reason #304 to take that old Ultra out back and shoot it 😉
