Database monitoring with microsoft sql server cloud solution

Hi,

Our customer has running everything in the cloud at microsoft. They also are using the AD Saas solution.

In the past they have used AD4DB monitoring but it only works if they use a separete machine in the cloud to monitor the DB in the cloud.

Does anyone know if microsoft support AD4DB on cloud sql servers? Or a solution in which not an additional machine in the cloud is needed just to have the db collector running (=additional costs)?

Thanks

Harald

Hi Harald,

Not sure if you are looking for latest DB Mon 4.x feature db-agent.jar

https://docs.appdynamics.com/display/PRO40/Install+or+Upgrade+the+Database+Agent

https://docs.appdynamics.com/display/PRO40/Database+Monitoring

As long as DB in cloud can be reached/tcp db port is open for db-agent.jar/ad4db collector to connect to mssql server running in cloud you should be able to get statistics, let me know if am missing the context of the issue here.

Can you please eloborate with architechture of test environment and the problem you are facing with configuring db agent or ad4db tool to monitor DB server for more clarity?

Regards,

Arun

Hi,

The customer is running everything in the cloud at Microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/solutions/hybrid-cloud.aspx

So they are running both their application servers and DB in the cloud. When they had a trial of AD4DB they used a single instance in the cloud just to run the collector and connect to the DB and AD saas-controller.

Running this instance costs money and they where not so thrilled by the interface of AD4DB (was in a seperate browser and not yet integrated in the controller).

When I visited them last time I demonstrated the new features and also the integrated look of AD4DB in the controller. They where again interested to use it but are not willing to just run an instance for the collector for this.

So the question is does anyone have experience setting up AD4DB with a cloud sql database from microsoft with a SAAS controller? And not running it from any other (virtual) machine

(I believe even microsoft itself is using ad4db? Possible to use that if this is the case?)

Thanks

Harald

Hi Harald,

As you might aware for new DB Mon 4.x user need to run atleast db-agent.jar on one instance but this db-agent.jar will collect DB stats for all collectors added and will report to UI, i understood that installing db-agent.jar is not an option here.

If above said is the case, i do not see any option as per my information, i would request you to raise help ticket help@appdynamics.com if you feel otherwise and to get experts confirmation or the support wil get confirm with concerned team if there is any such option which i believe not exists (if scenario is without running ad4db/DB Mon 4.x agent either in cloud or otuside the cloud to monitor db seever in cloud is not an option)

I understood that running/installing db-agent.jar outside cloud to monitor db server in cloud is not an option here, correct me if there is any disconnect here.

Arun

Hi Arun,

Yes indeed. AD does have connections with Microsoft but how to utilize this in such a scenario?
