How to ingest SNMP traps from a Cisco to Splunk?

 I'm trying to forward Cisco SNMP traps to my test Splunk environment.  I'm seeing the data that I wanted when I go to var/log/syslog but if I do my search on the Splunk console I'm getting gibberish data.  What else should I look into?
