How do I configure splunk_ta_jmx 3.3.0 to gather jmx data using SSL?

error : non-JRMP server at remote endpoint

This is the same message you get from jconsole when your certs are not in its trust store (its possible it could be appearing for other reasons but it doesn't seem likely).

service url :

service:jmx:rmi:///jndi/rmi://<host>:<port>/jmxrmi

I have tried :
adding my certs to mx4j.ks (no help)
adding my certs to %JAVA_HOME%\lib\security\cacerts (no help)

Both of which work when using them as the trust store for jconsole.

I am a bit surprised the default trust store did not fix this problem as jconsole connects without any additional arguments once your cert is in the default trust store. Why would this not be similar?
