Custom Google Maps Overlay

I have an application that searches for the latest weather condition on Google Maps. Weather data (each set of weather data has 45 events) will be added in every hour. Is there a way that I could display the latest 45 events on the map and place image file with the current weather condition of these 45 events?

Right now, a table at the bottom of the app page displays the latest 45 events, but when more data are added in, the cluster counter increases and the colour of the cluster will change accordingly to the default settings. This will be confusing for the users when they use the app.

I would like to place an image file on the map according to what the current weather condition is (refer to image below). E.g.: Cloud image for 'Cloudy' and Thunder image for 'Thunderstorm'.

Here's an image on what I intend to do (the circled area): http://f.cl.ly/items/0y361U1E0A3E1e1L180E/sg_Weather_QN.png

In order to do that you will have to either extend the module and define a custom overlay or implement another Google Maps module. I intend to add customization options in future that will allow to create such visualizations but atm there is nothing like that available out of the box.

Is there a way that I could get a guide on how the Splunk UI's module system works? I tried going to $SPLUNK_HOME\etc\apps\maps\appserver\modules\GoogleMaps\GoogleMaps.js and took a look around. Tried messing around with the JavaScript but changes weren't affected.

Yes, it requires some knowledge of Splunk's UI module system, though.
