Cisco ASA with NVM

Hi All,

i'm trying to install Splunk Ent. on a windows server to capture data from NVM on 1 ASA in my environment.

following this guide:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/security/anyconnect-secure-mobility-client/200600-Install...

do i need to install that linux box? given it's a pretty small environment?

it says this:

In a typical distributed Splunk Enterprise deployment, the collector should be run on either a standalone 64-bit Linux system or aSplunk Forwarder node running on 64-bit Linux.

but, i have a splunk forwarder installed in my enterprise install on the windows box, does that mean it's sufficient? i can carry on without installing the Ubuntu box?

thanks.

Hi,

The NVMCollector is a 64bit Linux solution.
Collector installation is described in en-US/app/CiscoNVM/Install

We have never tried using Linux Subsystem for Windows and an Ubuntu instance, but you could certainly explore that if you want to. It would not be officially supported.

Also, since the NVMCollector runs in Docker, you can explore using Docker on Windows-10.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/virtualization/windowscontainers/deploy-containers/linux-containers
Again, not officially supported deployment option, but an avenue to explore.

Please let us know how it works out.

Hi,

thanks for the response, i'm a little lost still. 😞

i didn't mean i want to install Linux in windows for sure 🙂

so from this statement here:

"In a typical distributed Splunk Enterprise deployment, the collector should be run on either a standalone 64-bit Linux system or aSplunk Forwarder node running on 64-bit Linux."

this means i need either a cisco collector or a splunk forwarder, and whichever i use, it runs on a Linux server? is that correct?

yet, when i installed Splunk enterprise on my windows server, when i look at the installed apps, there is a SplunkForwarder and SplunkLightForwarder, is this the same "forwarder" mentioned in the statement above? hence can i use it and not need to install a separate Linux OS box?

thanks.

Hi,

The NVMCollector is only compiled for 64bit Linux. So to run the collector you would need a 64bit Linux system or you would need to host Linux on your Windows box (VM, Windows:containers, etc.)

Does that clarify it?
